The island’s largest village, Kaunakakai, is located on the southern shoreline. The island of Lanai is southwest of Molokai and west of Maui. The island’s only city, Lanai City, is situated in the center of the island, 17 miles from Maui’s Lahaina and about 20 miles from Kaunakakai. Lanai City is the location of all major retail stores and the island’s only gas station. Located along Highway 440, the city offers easy access to Shipwreck Beach and Garden of the Gods, two of the island’s best-known destinations. Public education on all of the Hawaiian Islands is provided by the Hawaiian Department of Education, which operates a total of 384 schools throughout the state.
